Rik Bland wins again in Brisbane

Sunday the 26th of March,
Flick Off 9 am.  Woody Pointe club house.

A very, very warm day in SE Qld saw just six brave the heat for some flickin fun. A straight forward league would be played with the top two playing a grand final.
As always seems to be the case, last months finalists had to face each other in the first round, Rik had found Gus's weakness, and with devastating effect. Three dodgy shots trickled in as the expected thunder shot was being saved (the keeper frantically palming away the expected shot whilst actually watching the ball trickle over the line). Rik did manage a real cracker amongst the his four, and Gus got a couple of good goals back but the damage was done. So Rik started the day as he meant to go on, with a comfortable 3 points. Wil and Andrew played out a goalfest, with Andrew winning 8-5.
The second round had all the local rivalries in one go. Wil beating his brother James 3-1 with a couple of pitch invasions to be dealt with. The Sunshine Coast rivalry between Andrew and Gus saw the latter win 3-0. The Brisbane derby saw Rik take all three points from Giuseppe with a close 2-1 win.
The big game of round 3 was a very close and hard fought battle which ended all square, with Andrew and Giuseppe scoring 2 a piece.
Round 4's big game witnessed Gus go into a staggering 3-0 lead against Giuseppe, which Gus maintained till half time. Giuseppe has a great record of comebacks against Gus, and 3-0 didn't seem enough to the Newcastle man. Sure enough, not long into the second half Giuseppe broke and efficiently pulled one back. Gus though dug in, and refused to let the lead slip away. In the end Giuseppe could just not get the goals and the game finished 3-1 to a very relieved Gus, this securing at least 2nd spot.
Round 5 had the Andrew v Rik game, Andrew would really like to beat Rik, and this time he came no where near. Rik routing the Rovers fan 5-0.
So Rik topped the table with a 100% 15 points. Gus runner up with 12 points. Andrew 4th to Giuseppe by goal difference.
The Final, for the 3rd month in a row was played out between Rik and Gus.
Gus had given his goalkeeper a good work out after the round one game and felt almost confident going into the final. Rik seemed to be cruising and was playing very well, and had to be the firm favourite.
After 3 minutes Rik had the lead, which was doubled after 6. Two nil down Gus found an inner strength and fought all the way, hitting the metalwork twice and certainly having the majority of attacks, but Rik's stoic defending saw him win back to back trophies. Another good final, and a worthy winner.
Another great day, some great goals and a fair bit of good banter, not to mention Giuseppe's awesome lunch and hospitality.

Spyros Stratoudakis wins the Champion's League

The Greek club of Flaming Flickers has always creative ideas to promote the game and to organize fantastic tournaments. In recent weeks, the Flaming Flickers held a real Champion's league with a total of 32 teams. The tournament was very special as the group stage was played in home and away games. Some groups were very close to decide the qualified teams for the second round. From the last 16 round to the semi-finals, home and away games decided the winners. In the end, Spyros Stratoudakis won the big final against Vassilis Dragossis by a single goal (1-0). Nikos Psomiadis and Yannis Bougiouris reached the semi-finals. Congratulations to the Flaming Flickers for a great achievement!

Chris Kaberry wins in North Shields

Another tight and tense mini tournament was held in North Shields last night, hosted by current WASPA Cup holder Nigel Lamond.

Three very closely fought games were played out with Chris and Dave both edging the host narrowly by 1 - 0 in the first two. The final and deciding game was dominated in the main by Chris who missed some really good chances to take the lead and extend it. Dave made some great saves and was always dangerous on the break. Chris had a great chance with three minutes to go but hit the bar.  A tense shootout followed with Dave taking the lead and Chris scoring twice to move ahead 2-1. Dave tipped off the keeper and bar with his final shot.  These mini tournaments in Shields are very competitive and excellent practice for both playing and refereeing. More groups and clubs should try it.  Thanks to Nigel for hosting and for the tea, coffee and biscuits.

TFAS CUP Plates Event

Plates players with TFAS President, Kok Wee, in the center
The Group games of the FISTF International Open TFAS CUP 2017 saw a few upsets and tight battles between opponents.

14 players were knocked out after the group games of the TFAS CUP 2017. However, they could still battle it out for the Consolation Plate prize in this Plates WASPA Event.

The top 2 out of the 14 players who had the most points from the group games earlier qualified straight into the Plates quarterfinals. The remaining 12 players would fight for the 6 remaining quarterfinal spots in the Plates barrage round.

After a tense quarterfinal and semi-final which followed soon after, Nic Tan and a young Isaac Lim managed to fight their way to the Plates Final.

People would have expected a much more experienced Nic to win over his much younger opponent with his strategic and precise play. However, Isaac exceeded all expectations and managed to win the final 1-0. Well done!

The Bratwurst Cup for Hermann Kruse

What is our sport all about? Is it trophies, big rooms, lots of players? Or is it a few friends getting together, having some matches, a lot of laughs, enjoying the fundamentals of the game, a few beers and some great sausages!!! There's a place for the former at the elite level, but for the majority of times, the latter leaves a better feeling. A great little tournament was staged for Northern Falcons players courtesy of Hermann Kruse, who dubbed it the first Bratwurst Cup! A night of sausages, beer and table football. What more could you ask for on a rainy Friday night? Steve and Jonty, and Hermann and Simon opened the night, with Steve slightly rattled by the thunderbolt shooting of Jonty. Despite leading twice, Jonty kept him on his toes before Steve won 3-2. Hermann was thwarted by some acrobatic saves by Simon, but edged the match 1-0. Neil hadn't flicked 'competitively' for a while, and despite gradually getting his flicking back, went down 3-0 to Steve, while Hermann started to strengthen his grip on the title with a 3-0 win over Jonty, then Neil got his mojo back with a 1-0 win over Simon. Steve and Hermann battled to a 0-0 draw, and Neil beat Jonty 1-0. When Steve was held 1-1 by Simon, after a cracking chip from Simon from close range, it was all for Hermann to claim the cup, which he did when he beat Neil 3-0.

A great night, and what better souvenir from the evening than a couple of Bratwurst each!!!

McNulty edges Connolly in gripping style

On a Wednesday evening we staged an extra tournament to welcome Adrian Connolly(Western Flickers) from the Western suburbs of Melbourne in a four man format with a one game league structure and then straight Semi-Finals up at the Club House in Morangup. Adrian is currently 2nd in his clubs league just behind Bennido so he arrived with a good pedigree behind him and was in great spirits during the car journey with Ross Mcnulty in the 45min journey, along the way we stopped for some dinner and the bottle O named Gidgy Grog gave Adrian particular amusement. After the lads Chris Thorn and Hugh Best welcomed us we then began our night with the first games which pitted Mcnulty against Thorn, a tight defensive match ensued but Mcnulty edged the game after lobbing the keeper with a chip shot from just inside the shooting area a minute into the second half after piling on the pressure with high possession, Thorn tried his best but couldnt fashion a chance as Mcnulty remained water tight giving nothing away and triumphing 1-0. In the other game Best faced Connolly and again a tight match was played out with Connolly creating the better chances and midway through the 2nd half he tucked away a fine finish to end Hughs brave resistance and pick up a 1-0 win over the Perth lad who had spent the last weekend in Singapore competing in a Tournament over there and finishing 4th. In the 2nd set of games Mcnulty faced Best but both players had huge issues with their players sticking doggedly to the pitch which seemed to be playing very badly, luckily we have the Extremeworks pitches replacing the old ones soon and this was evident in a dire 1st half with possession being given away frequently as a direct result of the pitch problems. Mcnulty changed his Radical HW side at half time in favour of the Arrows LW and in the second half snook away with the game as he banged in 2 goals midway through the 2nd half with Best not able to get back in the game after a gallant effort yet again. on the other table Thorn played Connolly but it was Adrian who struck first blood with a cracking goal that came from a few quick flicks that opened Chris's back line up, it stayed 1-0 at HT but minutes into the second half he was 2-0 after a thunderous finish after another well worked move down the right flank involving 2 players and although Thorn tried to respond it was all in vain as Connolly made it 3 to put the game to bed and snare the top spot on goal difference after the first 2 games everybody had played. Into the 3rd and final League games the much anticipated top of the table clash pitted Mcnulty against Connolly and the game lived up to the pre match hype as Connolly started by putting Mcnulty firmly under pressure but the defensive flicks were constantly bailing him out just when Connolly looked set to create the shooting opportunity. 5mins in and Mcnulty broke down the right with two player and after entering the shooting zone he duly despatched a clinical finish which had Connolly knocking the goals out of place as the ball nestled in the mini onion bag. Again Connolly kept coming at Mcnulty but yet again defence prevailed and yet another break came with another fine finish put him 2-0 up at HT. In the second half Connolly and Mcnulty continued their attack minded tactics but Mcnulty put the game to bed with a well worked low shot that had Connolly's keeper grasping at thin air and 3-0 it finished, it really could of been a lot closer in all honesty. Thorn faced Best in the final group game to see who could sew up the 3rd spot and again Hugh put up another great effort and had the lion share of possession against Chris but after a goalless first half the game opened up in the 2nd half with both players going close minutes apart, it was Thorn though who got the vital break through after a move down the left opened up Bests rapidly improving defence, the keeper got a big touch from the resulting shot but couldnt do enough as the ball nestled in the net to secure a 1-0 win for Thorn. In the first Semi final Hugh Best took on Mcnulty but within the first 8mins Mcnulty had gone 2 up when more patient and incisive play had opened up Best's resilient backline. In the 2nd Half Mcnulty carried on the pressure and popped in another 2 to make in 4-0 in the end. In the second Semi Final Adrian Connolly squared up to Chris Barbara Thorn Thorn but in another cracking game it was Connolly who started the more brightly and it wasnt long before he had a 2-0 lead after a couple of absolute gems, it remained 2-0 at HT. in the second half Thorn came out fighting but ultimately Connolly was beginning to really get warmed up and consequently banged in another two fine finishes to settle to a 4-0 romp.
Onto the Final---A much anticipated and almost expected final began with both players again going on the attack early on but after great interplay Mcnulty opened up the Connolly defence on the right flank and struck an unstoppable strike that Connolly could not stop, yet again we all laughed as the goal was yet again airbourne due to the goalkeepers over excited effort to keep keep it out, Chris Thorn then retaped the goal down and play resumed, Connolly pushed on but with seconds remaining in the 1st half Mcnulty nailed in a super finish to go 2 up at the break. In the second half as expected Connolly came on strong and after creating a few half chances and a few shots that Mcnulty's keeper did well to deflect Connolly finally got a reward after a fine finish that lobbed helplessly over the hapless keeper. The game opened up again as Mcnulty refused to shut up shop and continued to look for a 3rd, it never came but sadly for Connolly neither did an equalizer that would of sent the game into the drama of extra time and the game ended 2-1 and Mcnulty took the title and continued his 100% home record against visiting players from Singapore, Belgium and now Melbourne. Thanks Adrian until next time pal and we promise to have the goals drilled into place for your next visit hahahah.

Bevin Reed wins the 2017 Founders Cup

(Report by Julian vd Merwe)

Saturday 11 March 2017, Pretoria, South Africa:

The 5th edition of the Founders Cup attracted a field of 11 entries, including debutant Doane Paulse - welcome aboard Doane!
This event is staged annually during the club's anniversary month - on the 24th March, PFC will be turning 4, and what an eventful 4 years it has been to date. As has become customary now, this event certainly never fails to bring about some surprises - and this year was no different as the event once again produced a new name on the trophy. Bevin Reed became the 5th different player to get his hands on the trophy of one of the "highlight events" on the PFC Subbuteo calendar!
This triumph marks Bevin's 8th WASPA title to date. The event started with a heavyweight clash between Bevin Reed & Chessray Jooste - an enthralling encounter which ended 2-1 to Bevin, with Bevin capatalising on a defensive error by Chessray right on full time! Last month's Copa del Apertura winner, Kegan van der Merwe scored a last minute equaliser against Jayden van der Merwe to end 1-1 in their Round 1 encounter. Debutant Doane Paulse earned a point by way of a 0-0 draw against Julian van der Merwe. Stanton Nortjie ran out comfortable 2-0 winner over Rowin Wilson. Adam Murray then copied Stanton's success by way of a 2-0 victory over Neilon Waterson - by the end of Round 1 we surprisingly saw Adam & Stanton as joint leaders on the standings!
In Round 2, Marlin Boyd (playing only his second tournament) caused the biggest thrill of the day as he beat Julian by 1-0 : the ball hitting the net literally as the buzzer sounded for full time! Doane then beat Neilon by 1-0 to surprsingly jump to 4th on the standings. Rowin then shocked Kegan by 1-0 with 3 minutes left to play. The "top of the table clash" ended 0-0 between Adam & Stanton. Another heavyweight clash ended 1-1 between Bevin & Jayden - that result ensuring that Adam & Stanton still jointly topped the standings after two rounds of play!
Round 3 then saw Bevin beat Julian by 1-0 for Bevin to go 2nd for the first time on the day. Adam then surprisingly took an 8th minute lead over Jayden, and had to rely on his goalkeeping skills to keep out an onslaught by Jayden - however, Jayden got the equaliser right on full time to force a 1-1 draw after another impressive display by Adam! Stanton's 1-0 win over Doane then suddenly got everybody's attention as Stanton (voted PFC's most improved player for 2016) still found himself in the top spot after 3 rounds of play! In Round 4, Chessray recorded the day's biggest result (3-0) over Neilon - to secure 3rd place overall. Adam's 1-0 win over Rowin capped off an impressive day for Adam as he deservedly secured 2nd place overall! The title decider was scheduled for the final match where "a winner takes it all" match unfolded between Bevin Reed and Stanton Nortjie. Once again, Stanton gave a good account of himself in the match but eventually succumbed to a fast attack from Bevin - the 1-0 win enough to hand Bevin the honours!
Lastly a final word on some stand out performances - Marlin Boyd yet again produced an undefeated run ; Debutant Doane Paulse secured 7th place overall - finishing above the likes of Rowin, Kegan, Julian and Neilon ; Adam Murray enjoyed an undefeated run - to finish 2nd overall, and if memory serves me correct, his highest finish in an event to date. Finally.... the "player of the day" has to go to Stanton Nortjie who wowed everybody with solid flicking - overall a very confident display by Stanton, and if he continues with performances like this during 2017....he is bound to turn some heads!
As always, a big thank you to all who shared this memorable day with us.

LIST OF PREVIOUS WINNERS :
2013 - Jayden van der Merwe
